In 1998 A few weeks
before Stacey's fifteenth birthday she went into hospital to have spinal surgery. It was
almost a 100º by this time. The operation lasted 9 hours and we were devastated when
we saw her for the first time in intensive care. She looked so vulnerable and we just
wanted to take her home and make everything all right again. She was supposed to be in 24
hours but due to complications she ended up being in there 16 days. Her lung kept
collapsing and they performed a tracheotomy. The Tracheotomy was removed a few days
before discharge. After nearly four weeks we brought her home. Recovery was slow and
painful and it took a good two years to gain her confidence again.
In November
2000 Stacey had to have soft tissue surgery to release her hamstring behind her knee and
thigh. Although a simple operation, it left Stacey traumatised and we feel she will never
really get over the past three years.
In 2001 Stacey had Autonomic nervous system
testing performed in London and the results have shown Stacey has seven different
breathing abnormalities, and brain stem epilepsy.
16th July 2001 and it was
Stacey's eighteenth birthday. We put this in the local paper:
We've watched
you fight to get this far, such courage you display, we want to say how proud we are, and
love you more each day, your laughter is contagious, your smile could light the sky, we
love you most of all because you never question why.
